About Us

Welcome to One Small Step, a digital platform for certified peer support. We provide real-time emotional care, crisis prevention, and goal-setting from trained people in recovery.

Our peers are available nights, weekends, and in the critical post-discharge windows when traditional care is offline – because that’s when relapse and disconnection are most likely to happen.

We bring both lived recovery experience and deep expertise from leading technology companies like Facebook and Garmin. We believe the future of mental health must combine human connection with user-centric design and scalable platforms to meet people where they are.

Our Story

One Small Step began with a simple but urgent realization: too many people in recovery are left alone during the moments that matter most.

For us, this work is deeply personal. We’ve lost friends and loved ones to addiction. We’ve also walked the path of recovery ourselves – feeling the isolation, the stigma, and the gaps in support.

We’ve seen the power of peer support, and we’ve seen its shortcomings: under-trained, under-structured, and often unavailable when needed most.

We created One Small Step to change that – bringing the trust of lived experience into a structured, digital-first model built to scale.

Our Mission

To connect people in recovery with trained peers who have walked the same path – providing real connection, real support, and real results.

Our Vision

To make peer support a trusted, scalable, and essential part of every mental health care system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is One Small Step?

One Small Step is a safe, supportive place to connect with certified peer supporters — people who have lived through similar challenges and are trained to help. We provide free on demand peer support during the hours of operation listed at the top of this page.

What is a peer?

A peer is someone who has personal experience with mental health, addiction, or recovery. They've walked a similar path and are trained to support others with empathy, respect, and understanding. They've been in your shoes and can show you that recovery is possible.

What training do they have?

All of our peers are certified and have completed professional training in peer support. They've learned how to listen, offer guidance, and respect your privacy — all while using their own experience to help others.

How can they help?

Peers offer emotional support, encouragement, and perspective from someone who's been there. They can help you talk through what you're feeling, support your goals, and remind you that you're not alone.

When should I reach out to a peer?

Anytime during the Hours of Operation shown at the top of this page. You don't need to be in crisis. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, need someone to talk to, or just want to feel heard, a peer is here to help.

What is the difference between a peer and a therapist?

Peers are not licensed therapists. They offer support based on lived experience, not medical training. They can relate, listen, and encourage, but cannot diagnose or provide treatment.
